HVAC FAQs for Asheville, NC

Can I install ductless AC in my historic Asheville home without damaging the walls?

Yes, you can install ductless AC in a historic Asheville home without damaging the walls. Ductless mini-split air conditioning systems are ideal for older homes because they require minimal drilling and no bulky ductwork. Installation typically involves a small hole (about 3 inches) to connect the indoor and outdoor units, preserving your home’s historic architecture and interior charm. This makes ductless systems a top choice for energy-efficient cooling in historic Asheville homes. Additionally, mini-splits offer zoned temperature control, which helps maintain comfort in homes with unique layouts. Trust a local HVAC expert experienced in historic home AC installation.

What’s the best AC setup for homes with basements in Asheville?

The best AC setup for homes with basements in Asheville is a zoned HVAC system or a ductless mini-split system. These options provide custom temperature control for each level of your home, preventing the basement from becoming too cold while effectively cooling the upper floors. Basements in Asheville can be naturally cooler and more humid, so choosing a system with built-in dehumidification is essential. Energy-efficient AC systems for Asheville homes with basements help reduce utility costs and improve comfort year-round. For the best results, consult a local HVAC professional experienced in multi-level home air conditioning solutions.

Why do so many older Asheville homes still use boiler heating?

Older homes in Asheville, NC often still use boiler heating systems because they were commonly installed when these homes were originally built—especially in homes constructed in the early to mid-1900s. At the time, boilers paired with radiators were one of the most reliable and comfortable heating solutions available.

Many of these systems are still in place today because they are durable, long-lasting, and can operate efficiently for decades when properly maintained. Unlike forced-air systems, boilers don’t rely on ductwork, which makes them a good fit for older Asheville homes that were not designed with central air ducts.

Another reason boiler heating remains common in Asheville is the region’s cool mountain climate, where consistent radiant heat is highly effective at keeping homes warm during long winter seasons. Homeowners also tend to keep existing boiler systems because retrofitting an older home with modern ductwork can be invasive and costly.

That said, while boilers are reliable, many Asheville homeowners eventually consider upgrading to modern high-efficiency HVAC systems or heat pumps for improved energy efficiency, lower utility costs, and added cooling capabilities.

Do I need a heat pump or a furnace in Asheville's mild winter climate?

In Asheville’s mild winter climate, a heat pump is usually the best choice for most homes. Modern heat pumps efficiently provide both heating and cooling, making them ideal for the region’s moderate winters and warm summers. They can handle most cold days without issue and are typically more energy-efficient than traditional systems.

A gas furnace may still be preferred if you already have natural gas, want stronger heat output, or live in higher-elevation areas that get colder. Some homeowners choose a dual-fuel system for added backup during colder temperatures. Overall, heat pumps are the most efficient all-around option for Asheville homes.

How does Asheville's elevation affect HVAC system performance?

Asheville’s elevation—ranging from roughly 2,000 to over 4,000 feet in surrounding areas—can have a noticeable impact on HVAC system performance. Higher elevations generally mean cooler average temperatures, especially at night, which increases heating demand compared to lower parts of North Carolina.

The thinner, less dense air at elevation can also slightly affect how HVAC systems transfer heat, making proper system sizing and installation especially important. In mountain areas, homes may experience more temperature swings and microclimates, so equipment needs to be able to respond efficiently.

Heat pumps, furnaces, and AC systems all work well in Asheville, but correct load calculations and humidity control are key to maintaining comfort and efficiency year-round.

Asheville, NC Neighbors Call Us For HVAC Services and Repairs

We're more than just an HVAC company; we're an integral part of keeping our neighbors comfortable through every season. We're proud to be the go-to name for HVAC services and repairs in Asheville.

Neighborhoods We Serve in Asheville, NC

Asheville is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own character — and its own HVAC quirks. The historic homes of Montford have very different needs than the newer builds in Biltmore Lake, and a 1940s bungalow in West Asheville calls for a different approach than a hillside home in North Asheville. Our technicians know the housing stock, the road access, and the seasonal challenges across every part of the Asheville area.

We provide air conditioning, heating, heat pump, and boiler service throughout:

  • Montford — Victorian-era homes where boiler heat and ductless mini-splits are often the right call to preserve historic details
  • West Asheville — A mix of mid-century bungalows and modern renovations, often needing creative ductwork or system upgrades
  • North Asheville — Established neighborhoods with mature housing stock that benefits from boiler service and high-efficiency replacements
  • Kenilworth — Hillside homes where zoned HVAC systems make a real difference in comfort and efficiency
  • Biltmore Forest — Larger custom homes that often run multi-zone systems requiring specialized service
  • Beverly Hills — Established homes with a mix of original and updated HVAC systems
  • Haw Creek — Wooded neighborhoods where outdoor unit placement and airflow planning matter
  • Biltmore Lake — Newer construction with more recent HVAC systems that need ongoing maintenance to stay efficient
  • River Arts District — Converted spaces and live/work properties with non-standard HVAC layouts
  • Oakley & Kenilworth-Adjacent Areas — Older homes with original ductwork that often benefit from sealing and rebalancing

Whether you're in a historic downtown home, a newer hillside build, or anywhere in between, we bring the same NATE-certified expertise to every Asheville address.

Don't forget: we also offer service on specialized products within that industry, such as boilers, ductless mini splits and GPS air purification systems.

Boiler Services in Asheville, NC

Asheville's housing stock includes a remarkable number of older homes — from Montford Victorians to historic mountain cottages and mid-century builds across North Asheville and Kenilworth — and many of them still rely on boilers and radiator heat. Boilers offer steady, even, quiet warmth that's especially well-suited to homes with original architectural details where adding ductwork isn't practical (or desirable). They also tend to last longer than forced-air systems when properly maintained, which is why so many Asheville homeowners stay with boiler heat instead of switching to a furnace or heat pump.

Comfort Central is one of the few HVAC companies in the Asheville area with deep expertise in boiler systems — gas, oil, and electric. We service hot water boilers, steam boilers, and the radiators, baseboard units, and radiant floor systems they feed.

  • Boiler Repair: From no-heat emergencies to slow leaks, banging pipes, low water pressure, and pilot light issues, our technicians diagnose the real problem and fix it right — without pushing you toward an unnecessary replacement.
  • Boiler Installation & Replacement: When it's time to replace an aging boiler, we'll help you choose a high-efficiency model that fits your home, your fuel preference, and your budget. If you're considering switching fuel types, we also handle oil-to-gas conversions.
  • Boiler Maintenance: Annual service keeps your boiler safe, efficient, and reliable through Asheville's cold mountain winters. Our maintenance includes a full combustion check, pressure inspection, water quality treatment, and component testing — the kind of thorough service that catches small issues before they become winter emergencies.

Heat Pump Services

Heat pumps are popular for heating and cooling homes near Asheville because they are energy-efficient and can work in moderate climates like Asheville's. They work by transferring heat from the outdoor air into your home, and they can also work in reverse to cool your home during the warmer months. We provide full-service for heat pumps to keep your home comfortable year-round.

  • Heat Pump Installation: Ready to make the switch to 365 comfort? Schedule professional installation of high-quality heat pumps tailored to your needs.
