How Long Will My Heating System Last?

While we don’t use our heating systems here in Fletcher, NC, as much as other areas of the nation, it is necessary to have a reliable heater that delivers the warm air you need for the winter months. One question we hear often during an installation, replacement or annual maintenance appointment is, “how long can I expect my heater to last?” While there is no exact answer, we can give you average lifespans. However, it is important to note that average lifespans are based on properly maintaining your system and they aren’t set in stone.

Average Lifespans

Here are the average lifespans of the heating systems we install and service:

  • Boilers – boiler systems, which would also include hydronic radiant floor heating, have an average lifespan of 15-20 years. This is for gas, propane and oil-powered boilers.
  • Furnaces – gas (or propane) furnaces have the same average lifespan as a boiler, ranging from 15-20 years. An electric furnace lasts a little longer, ranging from 20-30 years.
  • Heat pump systems (including ductless heating systems, high velocity systems and geothermal systems) – heat pumps have few moving parts and they don’t consume fuel to operate, they use electricity. Because of this, they have an average lifespan of about 25 years.
  • Electric radiant heating – electric radiant heating uses electric cables to generate heat. The component most likely to breakdown in this system is the cable itself. On average, these cables can last 20 years or more, outside of sustaining some kind of damage.
  • Dual fuel system – with a dual fuel system, you use a heat pump as the main source of your heating and a back-up gas furnace. The heat pump average will stay the same, but you can actually see a longer life from the gas furnace as it isn’t used as much.

The real key to longevity is making sure your heating system in Fletcher, NC, is properly maintained each year and that repairs are made on a timely basis. The experts from Comfort Central, Inc., can help you with both – just give us a call!
